Searching for semi-truck repair shop: what to look for

Here are the five things to look for when searching for a semi truck repair shop. We all know that getting back on the road ASAP after a breakdown is critical to the commercial trucker. Delays in delivering your goods can cause big headaches, resulting in lost revenue. Selecting the best repair shop for your semi truck is not only smart but critical. Here are the top five traits to look for when researching semi truck repair shops.

semi
  • Services – The run of the mill auto shop isn’t equipped to handle a massive semi truck. Simply, there’s just not enough room. You want a repair shop that specializes in semi trucks as they are more familiar with handling these high-powered machines and have the required and necessary equipment on hand. Also, the turn-around time will generally be quicker.
  • Availability – Accidents don’t keep to the 9-5 business schedule. Specialized semi truck repair shops will most likely offer 24/7 services to help get you back on the road and quickly. This type of availability should provide peace of mind if and when an emergency hits.
  • Background – Regardless of the service line or trade, its always a good idea to check the background of a company with whom you want to work. Check references, their social media outlets, etc. A service provider with positive reviews will want to continue to maintain a good reputation and will do what it takes to ensure that happens.
  • Certifications – All mechanics should be certified and should have their certification posted in a conspicuous location. You need to know that your repair specialist is certified to diagnose and repair diesel engines, drive train, brakes, etc.
  • Don’t choose solely on price – Yes, we all have budgets and the price may definitely have an affect on your ultimate decision. But, it shouldn’t be the deciding factor. There’s a saying, “you get what you pay for” and in dealing with the specialty of semi truck repairs, that phrase couldn’t be more true. Opting for the cheapest may end up costing you more down the line.

Short Bed Truck Conversion | GMC Sierra | Short Bed Conversion

GMC Sierra Short Bed Truck Conversion

Trucks have always been a vital part of the American car culture. These machines are no longer strictly designed for work as these days, they offer a rich all-in-one package, making them also suitable for road trip adventures, leisure activities and even performance stunts. As a result of their evolved nature, the pickup trucks are significantly larger than their predecessors.

Take the GMC Sierra 1500, for example – it hasn’t been offered as a short-bed truck since 2018 with the automaker being more interested in the more popular crew cab models. A Sierra owner decided he badly wanted a short bed Sierra and took things under control with a short bed conversion.

truck

As our friends from MuscleCarsAndTrucks report, the truck started its life as a regular Sierra 1500 with a standard long bed. And no, building a short-bed truck doesn’t involve just cutting the cargo bed as it also requires frame cutting (ouch!) and other mechanical modifications. In addition, the owner wanted a muscle truck appearance and lowered the suspension and gave the vehicle a set of large chrome wheels.

The result so far is a sexy and perky Sierra with built and finish quality that looks like a product assembled on GMC’s production lines. The truck also got a style-matching sleek two-tone paint job that replaced the stock white color. Once all the little details are put together, it’s definitely going to be a head-turner in a modern world where manufacturers no longer produce short-bed trucks.

Facts To Know About Short Bed To Long Bed Conversions

Turning a short bed truck into a long bed truck, otherwise known as short bed conversion, is definitely a thing, or wish for that matter, that you don’t see or hear about every day.

The question though is, how major is it? Can you just slap a longer bed on top of the existing frame and call it a day?  What are the other points you should keep in mind about this kind of modification? Read on for the answers.

It’s going to be expensive!

I’ll be blunt right off the bat here – be prepared to spend several thousand dollars on a short bed conversion.

Does it make sense to spend all that money for a shop to do this sort of thing? You be the judge, though the older the pickup truck, the more you’re going to lose – meaning, the truck itself may cost less than the conversion itself!

Can I do it myself?

Most certainly not. If you do have connections with people who do short bed conversion, sure, you can cut down the price significantly, especially so if you will also do a lot of the work and get the parts from junk or scrap yards.

The thing is, that the process isn’t as uncomplicated as you may think at first. The frame of the vehicle must be cut, lengthened and professionally welded, so it won’t collapse on itself when you’re driving.

Next, all the fuel and brake lines, driveshafts and other crucial components must be lengthened.

This doesn’t look that simple, right?  Trade it instead

There are many reasons why trading the truck you already have for the longer version may make less sense for you, but seriously, this will probably cost less overall.

What you must know is that lengthening the pickup’s bed yourself will undoubtedly hurt its resale value. Replacing the vehicle though, instead of cutting it up, is definitely a better idea.

What if, after trying out the long bed, you’ll want to go back? Again, trading the ride is just a more logical thing to do here.  Watch the following video to see a short bed conversion IRL.

Short-bed Replacement | Truck Bed Replacement | Truck Bed Restoration

Truck Bed Panels – Short-bed Replacement

Trucks are workhorses, no doubt, and their beds take abuse from the inside and outside. From damaging payloads to plastic liners that trap moisture against the bed floor, the inside of a truck bed gets abused. The outside of the truck bed is right there with it, taking hits from road debris and getting covered with salt spray. That salt gets into every crack and seam and slowly corrodes every bed panel, from lower quarters to wheel arches to the tailgate. To make sure your truck works as hard as it needs to while continuing to look great, you need a source of pickup bed replacement bedside replacement parts. If you don’t want to replace or re-skin your whole truck bed, we have the truck bed panels you need to repair the rust damage. Truck Color Trends | Semi-Truck Painting | Automotive Paint

Truck color trends, how will they translate from personal to professional?

What color we choose for our car says alot about us, or so it’s been said. Color is an expression of taste, individuality or even the desire to conform for some. The choice of color for personal vehicles can run the gamut but do professional vehicles get that same luxury? What about the hybrid world of trucking and specifically semi-trucks that do get the best of both worlds.  Professional with personal taste? Maybe just maybe the ideal combination and it just so happens to be the largest canvas for the art of color and design expression. So, how do vehicle and truck trends translate to semi-truck painting? Take a look and see what jumps out, according to Top Truck Trends, 2021. How does the backbone of the supply chain visually move itself into the future? Will 2022 produce a new crop? It’s early, let’s see.

With the “era or the pandemic” more and more trends lean towards road travel in a more self-contained form. For the family set the road trip as an option, which makes way for the trucking industry as the road is their “office space.” Which will stick? Some, maybe…

  • Nostalgic paint schemes seem to reign supreme with their orange, brown and yellow hues. Think 70’s and 80’s colors with retro paint schemes and black outlined wording to match.
  • Off road desert racing weighs in with Baja-esque colors. Neutral beiges and sunset tones.
  • LED’s: not so much a paint trend but rather a design addition upgrade. The movie “Cars” might have opened the door for this sub-category. We’ll give this one a well-deserved asterisk for honorable mention.
  • Blue and Red: always a classic, always a favorite. The standard #2 and #3 choices when it comes to automotive paint. * The corporate branding may preclude an owner from the choice of one of these 2 colors. Always a trend nonetheless.
  • White: a seemingly strange choice but to delve a little further makes good sense. It’s simply put, a blank canvas. Not so much an option for individuality and taste but more of the resale and conformity options.

Whatever the trends show, whether a lone truck or a fleet, trends and taste can be subjective. The options are not always available or if they are it may be in smaller doses as seen with chrome flame details on a standard red or white truck. The desire though for individuality, big or small, will always follow fine craftsmanship. Quality first is the point that will always be agreed upon regardless of variations of design. Finding an outstanding resource for outstanding work is what drives a consumer’s choice. Quality almost always produces loyalty, a concept that will outlive any trend any day.
